Good side hustles can help you build a business or make money immediately – but not necessarily both.
You decide which option suits you best. If you’re interested in building a business like blogging or writing eBooks, that’s great but it can take time to start producing an income.
Remember that when you see all the “Start a Money Making Blog Today” pins on Pinterest. Yes, blogging can be extremely rewarding financially, but it takes time. If you need money to cover the rent, right now, you need a different kind of side hustle.
The other very important aspect of choosing a side hustle to make money immediately is time. We only have so much of it, so make sure you use it as profitably as possible. That’s one reason I’ll never recommend taking surveys as a side hustle. Even if you do take surveys while watching TV, you need to take a LOT of surveys to make even a reasonable amount of money. That time can be much better spent.
5 quick side hustles to make money immediately
Walk Dogs or Pet Sit
This is a great way to get some exercise, fresh air and satisfy your urge to have a pet, without actually having one. Oh, and make some cash!
Busy people often have bored and lonely pets. Make it your business to help fix that problem by taking Fido out for a walk each day. Scale it up by walking a couple of compatible pooches at the same time.
Animal lovers can also take over caring for pets while their owners are away either by visiting each day to check in on the pets or living in and house sitting at the same time.
If your own lifestyle and living arrangements are flexible, house sitting can not only make you money, it can save you thousands of dollars every year – if done right.
House sitting doesn’t always involve moving in while the owners are away, it can also be as simple as making sure the post is collected and dealt with as necessary, the lawn is mowed and the garden tidy and that the home generally looks lived in.
If you own a relatively new printer, you can probably start this side hustle without investing a cent in equipment. Most printers also include a scanner so scanning photos and documents can be an excellent way to make some extra cash and the only cost involved is some soft gloves for handling the photos.

Sell Your Stuff
Let’s face it, if you need cash now, selling stuff that’s sitting around collecting dust is a no-brainer. The real question becomes; where to sell it?
I’ve sold second-hand stuff on eBay and yes, it’s a viable option. Mostly. The site is becoming more and more complicated for sellers and less interested in being a platform for once-off merchandise, so consider other options first.
I recently discovered the value of local buy/sell groups on Facebook. No listing fees. No final value fees. Just cold hard cash when you make a sale. Remember your clutter could be someone else’s must-have item.
Monetise Your Hobbies
People with hobbies they love, usually develop quite a high level of expertise and skill in their chosen hobby. If that’s you, then you could definitely make extra cash.
Some niches will pay off quicker than others so by all means exploit your photography skills but remember that it might take a while to produce an income whether you’re selling your images online or you’re offering your services as a wedding photographer.
The hobbies that can produce extra cash quickly are ones where you sell what you make. For example: wooden toys; hand knitted throw rugs; amazing celebratory cakes (check your local business regulations for food production); or propagating plants.
You can sell your products in person at markets or online via places like Etsy or a Facebook buy/sell group.
Is it worth your time…?
That’s the $64,000 question!
If you’re already holding down a full-time job, raising a family, and all the other things we’re fitting into our busy schedules, you’ll want to make sure any side hustles you choose are, in fact, worth your time. Especially if you need the cash, fast.
There’s no point spending endless hours online just to make $25 for the month. Your time is worth more than that. So, before you get sucked into writing 500 word ‘freelance’ articles for $10 each or filling out a thousand surveys for the equivalent of .05 cents a piece, consider if the task pays sufficiently to be worth your time.
Life is too short and if you see side hustles as a big part of your future, you need to make sure they’ll pay real money.
Remember, your income is only one side of the equation. If you’re having trouble paying your bills, it might be time to take a good hard look at your spending habits, too.
Like I said, life is short, make sure you live it to the fullest. There are plenty of side hustles out there that are fun and bring in extra cash, too!
